Design Studio

About this project

Build it. Race it. Make it better. An open-ended engineering space co-created with the museum's own exhibit team — ramp tracks, maker tables, and a 2,000-piece K'nex sculpture that shows what iteration looks like at scale.

The Works is a hands-on engineering and design museum that works closely with local schools and programs to give kids more STEM-based opportunities. Co-created with the museum’s own exhibit team, the Design Studio lets guests design, build, create, and test with different materials and displays. Completed June 2025.

What success looked like

Success was a studio co-created with The Works' own exhibit team — a place where kids design, build, test, and try again with real materials. It opened in June 2025 as the anchor of the museum’s transformed gallery, with the Burns & McDonnell Foundation in the leadership sponsor role.

“Ultimately, our transformation will increase our impact ensuring more children have access to engineering experiences that spark learning, build the engineering habits of mind, and inspire career dreams.”
